The Value of Suction Drainage for a Chronic Subdural Hematoma in Elderly Patients: A Retrospective Cohort study

Background: The use of suction in the subgaleal drainage system after burr-hole evacuation chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is still debatable. This study aimed to investigate value adding CSDH elderly patients. Methods: cohort retrospectively reviewed data patients operated on at our university hospital last eight years. inclusion criteria were who underwent a unilateral through two burr holes followed by placing tube. Two hundred seventy-three consecutive met criteria. Seventy-six (27.8%) received drainage. comparison between groups with qualitative was done using chi-square test. quantitative t-test. statistical analyses conducted SPSS software version 21 (IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, USA). Results: There no statistically significant differences and non-suction regarding hospitalization period, postoperative seizures, or recurrence rate. However, pneumocephalus volume group significantly lower than group. None developed acute intracerebral hemorrhage. Conclusions: Suction did not add closed rate CSDH. A prospective controlled needed increase evidence for this finding.
